NYLT

by Chris H.

?We learned how to?become better
leaders?and about making good
decisions in life.?

For those of you that don?t know NYLT is a week long summer camp at Camp Mataguay where you
learn to become better leaders. NYLT stands for National Youth Leadership Training. There were 50 Scouts
from the San Diego Imperial Council that attended. Joe G, Zach A, Mike P, Bryce W, and I were all the scouts
from Troop 51. Chris K, Bryan K, Jimmy W, Danny S, and Eric N were also on staff here at NYLT.

Everyday we had to cook our own food, and clean our patrol campsite. Our patrol was called the
Flying Purple Pirate Eaters which goes along with the theme here which was a Pirate theme. On
Thursday we left and went on a three mile hike where we had to orientate. At the end there was a
key to a treasure chest but the chest had six locks and each patrol had to find their key to the lock.
We also got to build a ballista which is a catapult and we got to launch water balloons at the staff
but ours fell apart so we had to throw the water balloons by hand. They also awarded silver spoons
and that was for the best patrol?s food for every meal. We were awarded two silver spoons and we
also won the Baden Powel Award for being the best patrol for one day and only one other patrol was
awarded that.

Everyday we went into a learning center and we learned many things about leadership and leadership
skills. We learned how to communicate better, become better leaders set goals for our troop and for
ourselves, and we also got to learn about making good decisions in life. As the week progressed
everyday we got to do things that were a little more fun than on the day before.

We also got to do a Geo Cache and we got to learn how to use the GPS systems. When we went to
use the GPS systems though, someone put a GPS in the toilet of a port-a-potty and the staff became
very mad. Jimmy W was my patrol's troop guide and we had a lot of fun at NYLT this year.
