Cold Weather Campout

By: Thomas Redlinger, Troop Historian

On February 17, troop 51 went to a cold weather campout. It was held in the Palomar
Mountains and was freezing cold. When we arrived there it was not snowing yet but when
it was morning there was snow everywhere and even our tents were covered in snow.
Right behind us was a hill that we would go sledding on, but we would only go in the
mornings because the adults didn't want us to go to bed with soaking wet cloths and I'm pretty
sure we didn't want to either. When it was time to eat we had to have hot water boiling for
every meal just so every now an then our body temperature would stay warm. On Saturday
at 11:00 we went on a hike. There was a short one and a long one to choose from. I chose the
long hike because we got to do geo cashing. Geo cashing is where you have a geo which is sort
of like a compass and it tells you how much feet away you are from a box. In the box are items
that other geo cashers put in and also a small notebook that tells you when those people were
last. But the objective is to take something out of the box and replace it with another one. You
also fill your name, the date, what you took and returned in the notebook for other goe cashers to
see. When we got back we ate dinner and went directly to bed. In the morning we ate, went sledding,
and went home. Well this campout was one of the best ones I have ever been on!
